dame’s rocket

May 25, 2026

I love the way Peanut, the purple flower, and the yellow flower looked in this picture. Summer must be amazing for Peanut because everywhere sprouts flowers that to him are probably as big as trees are to us. The purple flowers are dame’s rocket (Hesperis matronalis). They are considered invasive in Indiana and across much of the Midwest because they spread aggressively and can crowd out native spring wildflowers, which is probably why you do not really see people selling them openly.

The yellow flower, of course, is a dandelion. I do wonder how the purple flowers got there.

One little identification note, just because it is useful: dame’s rocket has four petals, while garden phlox has five, which is one of the easiest ways to tell them apart.

Indiana native plant sources often suggest downy phlox as a good alternative. (Indiana Native Plants Finder)

I felt very weird yesterday

June 02, 2025

Yesterday evening, I set up the window boxes, put some of my indoor plants in them, and then planted some seeds there as well: morning glory, marigold, and poppy. I love poppies. I really hope I can get some to grow this year. I spent time gardening in the front yard. I ripped out a bunch of weeds and planted some seeds in the front. I still have a lot to do! Lots of seeds, lots of weeds, lots of opportunity! It looks like it will be a lovely sunny day again today. Hopefully, not too bitey.

While I was in Illinois, some birds killed two of my sunflowers. I had un-staked them. I think the birds sat on top of them and snapped them. That happens a lot later in the year with my purple coneflowers. Those birds!

I went to a plant festival at Broad Ripple Park. I felt a little weird there. There were food trucks, stalls, and everything. It was nice. I did not see one person I knew there. No Broad Ripple Park people! I looked at the stuff at the stalls, and it was WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! I feel like the only affordable places to shop nowadays are the toggery and yard sales. Even thrift stores are now too expensive. Facebook Marketplace also seems good. I have just never used it. Everyone else has—even Eric. I need to get with the program or something.

I had a good talk with the Friends of Broad Ripple park and got to know their upcoming plans.  The budget for improvements has reduced so there is no longer going to be a road through the park.   That would make it an unsafe place.  I love that park.   I got a bandana and it has a squirrel on it!  The insult to Peanut and dogs everywhere!  I can hardly believe the insult!
