Almost August!

July 27, 2025

This morning, I woke up feeling a bit cranky, probably because my to-do list feels like a whole overgrown garden, with weeds sprouting faster than I can pull them. I wish I could just pause time, sit on the bench by my flowers, and breathe in the quiet green of the yard. One thing I regret this summer is not spending more time reading out here. Reading is like pruning my mind—trimming back all the wild, tangled thoughts so I can see clearly. I’m going to make a real push to read outside every day now. Just as my students benefit from silent, sustained reading, I think I need that same stillness—a few pages among the flowers to settle my roots.

Yesterday was mostly spent in my yard, my favorite kind of day. I cleared space around the evergreens, and now they can breathe. Today, I’m eyeing that bush near Joel’s window; it needs pruning to let in more light. This morning, I spotted a young tree sprouting up, like a gift I didn’t know I had. I’ll transplant it in the fall, once it’s strong enough. I already know the perfect sunny spot for it along the south fence, where it can stretch out and grow tall.

a gentle trust in slow growth—both in my garden and, metaphorically, in myself.

July 03, 2025

I have a bunch of gardening I want to finish before I go to Michigan. I have almost finished removing the plants from around the evergreen. I also found an evergreen sapling that I have planted by the gate to the backyard. I hope it grows. It took the other ones about 5 years to get to a noticeable size. I must remember that.

I’m investing in a future that’s years down the road, and that speaks volumes about my resilience and capacity to nurture. The awareness that it took five years last time, and that I must remember that again now, shows a gentle trust in slow growth—both in my garden and, metaphorically, in myself.

Peanut supervised while I transplanted flowers.

July 02, 2025

Peanut supervised while I transplanted flowers. Time goes so quickly when I am gardening. I am pleased with how everything looks. The next plan is to make some holes in the fence so the flowers get more light. Another idea is to have my tree trimmed that is in that corner. The fence is not to keep people out; it's just to keep dogs in. If I have a small dog, I don't need such a tall fence. I don't know what the answer is—maybe it is to drop the idea of being able to plant flowers there.

My chainsaw came in the mail yesterday. I am excited to learn how to use it.

July 1st

July 01, 2025

Speaking of gardening, I moved some more plants into the new gardens I am making, but I have more work to do. Yesterday, I spent a lot of time pruning. I also moved some pink day lilies to the front pathway area where they can get more sunlight. I put mulch around the tall evergreen in the front where I have removed the plants. I have to do that also around the west side of the tree. It is quite a production, but it will be nice in the end. Then I have to do the same thing with the Korean fir. I am removing all the plants inside the drip line. I either need a chainsaw or a man with a chainsaw. I decided to get just the chainsaw. The chainsaw arrives today, and I can use it to chop up the logs in the backyard and organize them neatly for firewood. Then I can plant flowers where the logs were cluttering up the flower bed. Pretty happy about this idea.

I am super glad it is raining because several of my plants really needed it.
