Rethinking my approach.

August 31, 2025

Yesterday, I moved some daylilies from the front bed on the west side to the back. That front spot will be my seed patch in the spring—a whole big bunch of them. I’m tired of seeds not growing, so I’m rethinking my approach. This year I noticed that when I planted cosmos more densely, they came up beautifully—better than anything else I seeded. My hunch is that chipmunks, squirrels, and birds are feasting on my seeds, so the more I plant, the more survive.

Next summer, I have a bold plan: I’m going to plant a giant 10-pound bag of sunflower seeds—the kind sold as bird food. I’ll also fill the beds with marigolds, calendula, cosmos, and a wildflower mix. All of these thrived for me this year, especially when planted in high density. My garden plan isn’t just about planting—it’s about vision. I problem-solve (plant more seeds so some survive the critters) and imagine abundance.
I also worked in Dr. Cho’s yard yesterday—the dentist’s office. I trimmed bushes and cut back plants extensively. Next time, I may plant some bulbs there. My strategy is to wait for a rainy stretch so the flowers can take root where weeds have been ruling. (See my rhyme? “Plant flowers where the weeds reign.”) It’s true, though—the best way to get rid of weeds is to crowd them out with better things

I felt very weird yesterday

June 02, 2025

Yesterday evening, I set up the window boxes, put some of my indoor plants in them, and then planted some seeds there as well: morning glory, marigold, and poppy. I love poppies. I really hope I can get some to grow this year. I spent time gardening in the front yard. I ripped out a bunch of weeds and planted some seeds in the front. I still have a lot to do! Lots of seeds, lots of weeds, lots of opportunity! It looks like it will be a lovely sunny day again today. Hopefully, not too bitey.

While I was in Illinois, some birds killed two of my sunflowers. I had un-staked them. I think the birds sat on top of them and snapped them. That happens a lot later in the year with my purple coneflowers. Those birds!

I went to a plant festival at Broad Ripple Park. I felt a little weird there. There were food trucks, stalls, and everything. It was nice. I did not see one person I knew there. No Broad Ripple Park people! I looked at the stuff at the stalls, and it was WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! I feel like the only affordable places to shop nowadays are the toggery and yard sales. Even thrift stores are now too expensive. Facebook Marketplace also seems good. I have just never used it. Everyone else has—even Eric. I need to get with the program or something.

I had a good talk with the Friends of Broad Ripple park and got to know their upcoming plans.  The budget for improvements has reduced so there is no longer going to be a road through the park.   That would make it an unsafe place.  I love that park.   I got a bandana and it has a squirrel on it!  The insult to Peanut and dogs everywhere!  I can hardly believe the insult!

a positive tone for the day

May 09, 2010

I got busy planting a vibrant new flower garden in the front yard. I chose a colorful mix of daisies, marigolds, and petunias. The daisies, with their cheerful white petals and sunny yellow centers, add a touch of brightness. The marigolds bring warmth with their golden hues, while the petunias contribute a splash of color with their various shades.
